Bookoff McAndrews (BoMc) is seeking a Patent Practice Manager to lead all administrative aspects of the firm’s patent practice. The position will involve managing the firm’s team of 10+ patent specialists/paralegals in support of the firm’s 40+ patent attorneys, along with related hiring and training functions. In addition, the position will involve supporting and optimizing all patent prosecution functions across the firm, by collaborating with the firm’s docketing and accounting teams, and modernizing the firm’s processes for generating documents, managing e-filings, and coordinating across teams.

Specific Duties

The Patent Practice Manager’s primary responsibilities will be to lead all efforts to support and improve the firm’s patent prosecution practice, including:

  • Staying abreast of PTO procedures, pilot programs, and technology updates, and updating the firm’s attorneys and patent specialist team on best practices and procedures.
  • Managing and coordinating the firm’s patent specialist team:
    • Hiring and training the firm’s patent specialist team, and establishing uniform patent specialist expectations and best practices and procedures
    • Managing pairings of specialists to attorneys, reassigning cases and filings between patent specialists during absences, and coordinating after-hours and overflow filings
  • Researching and initiating new efficiencies and best practices across entire patent practice:
    • Helping the firm implement and update automations, including auto-generated PTO forms and automated IDSs, and optimizing the firm’s electronic “PTO logbook” process
    • Updating and maintaining the firm’s database of templates
    • Leading efforts to update and optimize the firm’s technology platforms and patent practice outsourcing vendors (e.g., AppColl, Anaqua, Worldox, Docusign, etc.)
    • Improving the firm’s ability to collect and learn from its data (filing volumes, bandwidth, etc.)
  • Interfacing with the firm’s docketing team:
    • Optimizing new matter procedures and reports
    • Collaborating with firm’s docketing team to evaluate tools and procedures
  • Interfacing with the firm’s accounting team:
    • Coordinating with accounting team on PTO fee codes, invoice disbursements, and firm credit card statements
    • Assisting accounting team with maintaining the firm’s deposit account

About You

  • Enjoy being involved in all aspects of a growing and changing law firm environment.
  • At least eight years of recent patent practice experience in a law firm setting across any of a variety of roles (e.g., patent paralegal, filing coordinator, IP manager, docketing manager, etc.).
  • Superior knowledge of patent rules/regulations and procedures, particularly of the USPTO.
  • Excellent business judgment and relationship-building skills, and the ability to lead and influence at all levels.
  • Ability to multi-task, manage multiple priorities, and work in a team environment.
  • Positive attitude toward client service.
  • Enjoy working in a vibrant, but flexible office environment. This role will require some presence in the firm’s DC office, to be determined at a later date.
  • Self-starter with commitment to success and personal professional growth.
  • Outstanding attention to detail, organizational, interpersonal and professional service skills (written and verbal).
  • Preferred experience with Foundation IP, AppColl, Worldox, and/or Anaqua.
